Just got this little beauty.
Not much online about this guitar, so here’s what I know:
Either made 1980, 1981 only or 1980 – 1986. Nothing made after that anyway.
Made in Korea by Cort, and had same guitar with different trim / hardware and badging in the “Kay 45” aka “Kay Rifle” guitar and the “Cort 45” guitar.
This guitar is interesting and I wanted it as it’s a neck thru design! I only own one guitar that’s a real neck thru, my magnificent Washburn A20V. The difference in tone and resonance is ridiculously good. And I like the fact that the neck won’t separate from the body from heat / humidity changes and impact like a glued in set neck! Not generally a fan of bolt ons. Joint is so thick and heavy.
The neck is pretty darn thick – not thin and no shredder. Seller calls it like a “D” neck. It’s not ‘baseball bat’ thick (1″ style thick), but it feels good in the hand. See metrics below – it’s thick!
This came with the original (vintage) (aged) leather case. This thing is so small. 34″ total length with a tiny 5.5″ long headstock. In pictures, the headstock looks large, but in person it’s tiny and about as small as you could want with full size tuners on a travel guitar.
I bought recently a Fernandes Nomad aka ZO-3 aka “Mr. Elephant”. It has a built in speaker, but the couple issues are:
It’s heavy at 6.2 lbs for ‘small’ travel guitar.
It’s big with the speaker in the body and the headstock is quite big and wide. This listed Hatchet had me re- thinking this one for a main flying / ferry / travel guitar.
Weight: I clocked in this Hatchet guitar at 4.8 lbs (pounds). 5.5 lbs (pounds) WITH the case.
And about 9/10ths of a pound for the leather case on it’s own.
Nut width is 1+ 11/26″ or 1.6875″ – full width!
Thickness at 1st fret: 7/8″
Thickness at 12th fret: 15.5/16″ (almost a full inch)
I have seen one posted online just like this one in red. And most if you ever see these are natural wood finish where you can see the 3 piece laminated neck thru. Those models also have two mini toggle switches and one of the toggles sends the pickups out of phase. This black one has single mini toggle and I believe from limited testing at the sale simply is a 3 way pickup selector.
The nut is broken in D / G zone so I will hand cut a new bone nut for it. Handily I just cut my first nut for my Epiphone jumbo a week ago ๐
At the sale, it was making some loud bad noises which seller claimed was his cheap 1/4″ cable. I suspect the guitar jack but we shall see. It did sound quite nice thru his favorite tube amp.
Edit: and yes, it turned out it was his bad cable. Honest seller. Plays great thru my amp / cable setup ๐
How much did you pay for it?
I paid $175 cash. Buyer didn’t want to sell at $150. In a way this felt a bit high for my cheap prices I pay, but in hind sight I’m thrilled I got it. I’ve already taken it to a work trip in Indian Wells (Palm Springs) for a week, and then a little later I got a free ‘Kustom’ small practice amp and together they sound gorgeous for work away in Boston area for the past couple months. Sorry for the late response.
This was my 1st electric guitar. I loved it! I replaced the stock pickups with the Duncan distortion model. Wow, what a difference! Yeah, the guitar was lost over the rigors of travel during my time in the USAF. I miss this guitar. I would love to purchase another one.
