Just did SMD 5050 green LED dash swap! Finally installed ram air tube guards.
Removed gauge cluster quickly. And then got bogged down with installing the ram air tube guards. They have been missing since I bought the bike and I got these spares from a parts bike awhile back. Had to remove the entire front nose fairing and headlight off the bike to get them in the fit is so tight.
Anyway back to lighting. I bought a single SMD 5050 green LED strip some time back and finally got the time to work on it.
Also got interrupted by phone calls, and having to pick up production gear for a shoot on monday. Grrrr.
Resumed work after moto ride to berkeley be had to re put back in pulled gauges. Driving 60 Mph on fwy with no windscreen at all isn’t as bad as you might think.
I got the tach threaded and then the speedo with a lot of small custom solutions with spare wire and rubber protectors. When I put it all back in, the speedo strip wasnt lighting at all. Took awhile for me to figure to diagnose it with a AC / DC wall wart inside instead of constantly on and off the bike.
I discovered my new soldered wires to the cut factory strip were not working at all.
So Sat am back to work, read about “tinning” the wire and circuit ends first then joining w solder. And that worked great! Now they both light and are much brighter and custom green to boot.

Step 1: remove windscreen, and inner gauge plastic dash surround cover, just two screws to remove that part. (Your bike should not look this dirty).
Step 2: unbolt these two bolts to free up gauges. Do not unbolt upper ones, this whole unit comes out a lot easier with removing the (2) lower 10mm bolts, I’m pointing to left side one.
Detach two electrical leads shown to the gauges, and also the speedo cable that I’m pointing to. The whole thing is now free to lift out.
SMD 5050 strip that I soon cut in half shown also:

So from the backside, locate one of the bulbs that lights up the tach or the one for the speedo and pull out the rubber seal with bulb. You’ll want to tap into the 12V

Next – unscrew the clock faces, just the two little screws so you can have the room you need to wiggle in the SMD strip. I leave the faces loose but don’t remove them.

Here’s the SMD strip wrapped around the tach now. I attached a wire into the bulb holder, passed the wires through the opening and pulled them down to the bottom of gauge area. The black and grey wires are back fed through the stock bulb openings. I wired these extra wires into bulb socket and then attached them to the LED strip leads.

Here’s the wires I fed into the bulb holder, I had some extra car stereo connectors and used that, and then jammed a piece of plastic in between the leads to isolate them from each other. I then stuffed the rubber socket holder back into the back of the gauge cluster to keep it watertight. I can also go back to stock bulbs if I want to this way.
Close up on the speedo and strip tucked behind it.

Here’s the tach plugged in and running!
It’s not too bright at all, just right I am guessing. I don’t think I’d want it any darker so the 5050 SMD extra bright really helps. The super bright green outer circle will be covered up with the gauge plastic cover.
The gauge plastic covering is off and it’s not bolted back in. (I had a problem with the speedo one, apparently my soldering of the cut other half of the strip did not go well). It looked good but won’t pass 12V down it. Hmmm.

Sweet! I just got speedo strip 2 working. I “tinned” the wire first w solder and let it cool and used the factory end of the LED strip where it had been “tinned” at factory and pressed them together and added more solder and voila! Full install pics and nighttime matched exposure picture coming later.
Here’s the installed new dash gauges. The green is a really rich nice green to the eye. Same exposure as first picture. 1/2 second shutter, ISO 400, lens f5.6 , 55mm zoom, I only slightly modified the White Balance to make it a little greener as it looks to the eye.
Comparison to my (crappy) stock old lighting. Note the speedo bulb was in fact burned out, so that upper area would have been a little brighter as stock.

Ok, it was a misunderstanding. We’re friends again
I got my bike running again today. Just needed a little throttle with the choke as it’s sat awhile. Ran fairly easily. Drove up to Montclair and back.

Oh I’ve done it, Green Magic is mad at me.
Haven’t driven her since Dec 7th, Green Magic does not like to be ignored. Dusty and needing a clean. Motor cranks no problem but not even a cough.

California cold as sh&t today
Had to drive to work about 100 miles round trip. The morning at 10 am in the sun was really cold – about 40. My rear tire slid early on some very cold tarmac.
The ride home in the dark was worse. My fingers went totally numb. My thinsulate leather gloves were not up to the task. 40 degrees and not the right gear made for a very un fun ride.
On the plus side, I had Redwood Rd all to myself, not one motorcyclist or better yet not one car for twenty miles. I also noticed a strange thing riding over the pass in the mountains. Something flickering in my side vision. Eventually I realized I wasn’t imagining it or cold hallucinating it but it was a large bird or even an owl and it was flying right in front of my bike along with me in my headlights for at least well maybe 200 yards or so. I guess it was using my light. Was weird but cool.

Lake Chabot, Montclair loop with C
Drove up to T & H house and had late bday celeb. Got new AlpineStars gloves! Drove to Castro Valley and hit Don Julio’s for a food break, that was nice. Walked about Lake Chabot as it was getting colder and darker.

Bought 4 into1 titaninium Kawasaki exhaust last night
Worked in Napa and went to check out a used ‘ZX6’ stock Kawasaki titanium exhaust system. Bought the whole system for $55 which is a steal, however, this is not a ZX6 exhaust as far as I know. It looks to be a ZX7R exhaust and don’t know if I can make it fit. But stupid cheap price compelled me. My stock duals are heavy, duals, and quietly boring. Ends are rashed too from previous owners. So I’ve been interested to get rid of the stockers…
The header on pipe says “KHI M 048” which means Kawasaki Heavy Industries. The can says
“Model specific code: Kaw3700900”
“Serial number: 7 J 1”

Morgan Territories my Girl and Oktoberfest Clayton
Drove 110 miles today 2up with my Girlfriend on the back. Really fun, it was a hot day in 82 + temps and full sun. On loop around Mt. Diablo, we stopped for drink in Clayton (last call for hydration or anything really) and discovered an ‘event’ there – Oktoberfest! It was awesome fun, glass beer steins everywhere on the street. Split an Oktob brew on pizzeria patio in the shade and a lot of water and headed to Morgan Territories. Beautiful, stopped in the park to stretch / relax.
Cute farmland, gorgeous really. I felt my passenger falling asleep several times in and out, that was scary! Had to stop in Castro Valley Peet’s to get her energized. Fun twisties back kept us both alert.
In Morgan territories at the big right turn, eased out clutch, half throttling, and pinned it in 2nd all the way to 14,000 redline! I was kinda nutty, hadn’t been past 10K on Green Magic yet. I tell ya, though, the weight of pillion makes a huge performance difference and forget very aggressive cornering. Bottoms out on bumps and wallows in bumps in turns big time and scrapes center stand, a big crunch there underfoot. Still… so much fun.

Mines Road run, 1st time. 13 miles up. Also new DB windscreen installed!
Also a spectacular wrong turn, maybe best one I’ve done past Mines Road to a park that dead ends after ascent and descent over a peak ridgeline run with gorgeous views!
We also drove into downtown Livermore to get a lunch, and headed to a rumored ‘cute old town’ downtown and stumbled onto a Nostalgic Car show that was packed. Pretty cool, and great all you can eat Indian buffet we ate out on patio where the show car winners happened to strut by
In morning I was also alarmed to have gas pouring out leaks onto the ground on start up first and second try. This happened once before I let the bike sit for 4 weeks. This time about 2 weeks or so. Leaking out of cylinder 1 & 2 with gas dripping off intake on #4 too at least if not them all.
I theorized that maybe my float needles are sticking in the seats, and the carbs overflow and leak. So I let it sit for 20 min, stewing and on my forum researching http:///www.zx6e.net which is an excellent forum.
I went back to bike and with it still off rocked the throttle back and forth 6-7 times +, hoping it could possibly unstick the float needles. And whaddya know? Started right back up and not a drop leaking. Hmmmm. Mildly worried first 1/4 of trip and then just solid fun!
Prior to starting bike, I installed a new Double Bubble windscreen to try it out. WOW, what an amazing difference. Gone is the highway (50 mph+) buffeting and roar. There is no cockpit wind blast until slight start about 50 mph is first you notice a little wind now. Gonna make this bike such a better tourer!!

Tilden, 3 bears, pigfarm hill w Bailey & Harley
Friend in from east coast again, and Hunter kindly volunteered his Harley and gear so we could go ride after work. Wednesday mid week and we’re both pretty tired out from work week etc… but fun of course nonetheless. A squirrel almost commits suicide under my front wheel as I am highest speed of day (80) down back of isolated 1st ‘bear’ hill.

Marin. Hwy 1 Stinson. Bolenas. Pt Reyes. Lucas Valley. Nicasio. 3 bridge loop!
Fantastic trip. Probably about 150 miles total. Left late at 11am. But sweet highway 1 made up for it off the 101 in Mill Valley. Attacked corners with fresh pavement. Best quality turns I’ve ever done on a bike. Very thrilling. Beautiful drive out of Stinson and past Bolenas. Fresh half dozen oysters for me in Bolenas. Wet fog “rained” on us at Pt Reyes tip. Brrr…
